I'm not sure if this should be the role of the browser - sounds more like functionality which you want to have on the OS-side...

Actually, it sounds more like what plugins already do for you. I don't have names, but if you look, you should find something; however, I don't think they do save it in a folder, but somewhere like the web.

It is right, you can make this with a plugin : using ExternalApplicationButtons.

Just create a new .txt document, and make a new button who aim on this document : it's like a memo in firefox : when you click on it, the files open in your favorite text editor !
