A simple idea to loose the status bar (which takes place just for getting infos of where the link is pointed to) : change the URL in the URL bar whenever a link is hovered, and put back the current URL when it's not the case.
I really like knowing where the link is going (that's the first thing I change when installing Safari), but I think that there is no point wasting the space of a status bar.
