In my other browser, there are no separate Stop and Reload buttons, only one that do both. The reason is simple, if it has finished loading, there is no need for Stop; if it has not, there's no need for Reload.

Yes it's a good idea, actually the "stop-or-reload" add-on (no link sorry i'm too new) provide that. I use the strata40 theme, inspired by Firefox 4 mockups , and the stop and reload button are merged in once, so I think this feature will soon be integrated :-)

But some websites are running active content, like playing music. To stop that simply click the stop button, but if they were merged :/

(but on the other hand, its a pretty old way to play music :/)

Having a button with two different functions could be a dangerous approach. In this case I think combining both buttons in one would be a logical thing as both functions are so much related to each other and it is not necessary to use them both at the same time:

  • stop or resume/do-a-new load.

It sounds a little bit like the "Play and Pause" approach used on music players. It is very easy to test this with users as Safari has something that goes in this direction (although they do not use something that could totally be called "button"), I wonder how is it working with inexperienced users...

In this particular feature, Chrome got a bad approach, having two buttons with different icons on it to do a reload. Firefox should avoid doing that.

If I had the necessary rep I would totally vote for further explorations on this proposal :-)
